LWP-NOW BOOKING 2018 (1 of 1)Pin

If you’re in Michigan, you’re probably looking out the window at this cold and rainy day and wondering what that groundhog was thinking.  But, I promise spring will come.  Green grass will start sprouting again.  The sun will come out again.  And I will be here, ready to start planning your spring, summer or fall session whenever you’re ready!  Give me a call or send me an e-mail and we can discuss what you have in mind.  And in the meantime, here are some of my favorite photos from warmer days to get us through this rainy gray patch and remind us that spring and summer are just around the corner…

Recently, I took a little “hiatus” from my photography business so that I could focus more on my family.

I say “hiatus” in quotes because, in the four months that I was supposed to be taking a break from photography, I:

•  Went to a photography conference in Atlanta, GA where I learned a ton of information, met some really inspiring photographers and was basically in photography heaven.

•  I shot a newborn session, five studio mini sessions and two concept shoots.

•  I finally caught up on editing all the images of my daughter from last year (there were a lot).

•  I practiced shooting nature, macro and landscape images.

•  I shot lifestyle images of my daughter for entire days at least once a week for the first four months of the year.

•  I entered a huge photography contest and one of my images placed in the Top 100 for it’s category (50th place out of 13,283 images entered!).  Over half of the photos I entered made it to the Top 30% or higher.

•  And, I continued to take online classes, read about photography and make plans for when LWP would “re-open”.

So, what I learned from my little “hiatus” the most, was that I will probably never be able to quit photography.

It is a huge part of my world and I want to pour my heart and soul into capturing families again, using everything that I’ve learned over the last four months.

For that reason, I am happy to announce that I am now booking sessions from June though November of this year!

If you’re interested in booking a session or would just like more information, click this link to contact me and I will send you our new pricing list, which includes a special discount for all return clients now.  I’ll also be sharing a blog post soon that goes into a little more detail about the change in our collections, our products and services offered and why I think these changes mean awesome things for all of my clients. :)

And because all LWP blog posts must contain pictures, here are some of the lifestyle images I’ve been shooting of my own family while on my “break”:

Part of the reason I decided to take a little hiatus from LWP this winter was so that I could donate photo sessions when an opportunity arose that spoke to me.  Late last year, a friend that I’ve photographed a few times went through a rough start with the arrival of her first child. Baby George was born the day after Christmas and they discovered shortly after his birth that he had malrotation in his intestines and had to have surgery.  When I read her posts on Facebook about what had happened, my mommy heart strings were pulled and I felt that this would be a perfect time to use my photography in a really rewarding way and would hopefully make this strong new mother smile.  So I offered to do a newborn session for their family as a gift.

As it turned out, we weren’t able to do George’s photos until he was about 2 months old.  Which is around the same time one of my oldest friends asked me to take some pictures of her 6-month old.  Normally, I’m an on-location photographer, but photographing babies in February in Michigan would probably result in lots of little red noses and 5-minute photo sessions.  So, I decided to rent a studio for the day.  This is starting to sound a little “If you give a mouse a cookie”, but…if you give a photographer a studio for an entire day, she’s going to want more cute kids to photograph. :)  So, I booked the rest of the day with a few previous clients and set aside a little time to take pictures of my own baby.

The day was filled with baby smiles and giggles and catching up with some of my favorite families.  Here are a few of the images from each of those sessions:

Cold January days were made for looking back at photos filled with love and laughter and gorgeous warm sunlight.  <3  Had to share these pictures of this adorable couple and their little baby bump from last year.

The bump, the sun flare, the light in her hair, their hands surrounding their little one…sigh…this is easily one of my favorite images from 2015:

January is my favorite time of year.  It feels like a clean slate and the perfect time to make big changes that will bring our family closer to our goals.  And we’ve already decided on one big change for 2016:

We are putting Light Wings Photography on hold and won’t be scheduling any photo sessions for a bit.

I don’t even know if there is a way for me to adequately convey how much we’ve struggled with this decision.  But after more than a year filled with reflection and long talks, I’ve found that it’s still in my heart to step back.  I could try to explain the reasons why, but I guarantee it would end up being more of a novel than a blog post.  So, I will just simply say that running a small photography business is not a good fit for our family at this moment.

Our hope is to open LWP again when the time is right for us, be that 6 months from now or 3 years from now.  While we take this time to figure all of that out, I will continue to post here and on my social media accounts about sessions from this year that I loved, creative projects I have planned for next year, as well as fill your feed with photos of my gorgeous daughter.

If you were hoping to book a session with me next year, feel free to shoot me an e-mail (kristin@lightwingsphoto.com will still be up and running).  I will either let you know if I’m ready to start taking sessions again or I’ll refer you to one of the amazing local photographers in the area that I love and admire.

And to every single client I’ve had in the 6 1/2 years since I did my first photo session….thank you.  It has been a pleasure to watch your families grow through my camera lens.

Much love and happiness to all of you in the new year.

XO,

Kristin
